I'm trying to book a series of flights for next-next weekend (July 1st), and I've discovered something interesting: one-way flights aren't as ridiculously expensive as they used to be. In fact, I can put together a set of one-way flights that are cheaper than the round-trip flights I've found, by choosing the appropriate airlines (Delta and American).

I wonder when this happened...maybe Southwest started it? Other than increased suspicion on the part of the TSA, I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing here that makes this a bad idea.

Sigh, I hate booking airline tickets. God, get me out of the South.

Two things:
1. One part of rehearsing that bugs me is plunking through parts; it's boring, and it's rather inefficient because hearing your part in isolation is only one step towards singing it in combination with others. Plus, part-plunking interrupts the rehearsal for everyone else. I therefore propose an INNOVATION: every choir member gets a little electronic keyboard with an earphone. Then, while they're singing they can play along on the parts they can't sight-read, without interrupting the others and while hearing the whole piece take shape.

OK, that assumes that all your choir members have some basic piano skills. If they don't, my second idea, which requires some equipment I'm not sure exists: give every member an earphone, and pipe their part alone into the earphone, which they can then sing along to. Tricky bit is to get four or more synchronized channels output at once to a large number of earphones. Alternatively, you could give one person in each section a keyboard, and have everyone listen in to their part-plunking.

So that's my idea. Someday, should I join a choir again, I'm going to have to try this out for myself.

2. I play the soprano recorder, which is high-pitched and so potentially painful. I am always a bit paranoid about my tuning in the group, therefore. Last night, however, between songs, the woman who was hosting us said I was very well in tune, and that I must have been in a band before. *BEAM* I went instantly from feeling like a potential liability--the amateur player who is perhaps too shrill or flat sometimes--to feeling like an asset, a soprano-recorderist who actually plays in tune. I didn't go so far as to become smug, but the compliment was very welcome indeed.
