I'm preparing to teach about Uranus and Neptune, which I've been thinking of as the "blue twins". That then made me think of the Istari in the Lord of the Rings, and how two of them were known as the "blue wizards" who went off east. This leads me to consider correlations between the Istari and the major planets outside Earth's orbit. Here we go:

1) Mars = Radagast "the Brown". Mars is orangish-red, not brown, but it's the smallest of the five, and the one most associated with the possibility of life. (Radagast was primarily concerned with animals and nature.)
2) Jupiter = Saruman. The largest of the planets (but see below). Is many-colored, and Saruman eventually re-monikered himself as "Saruman of Many Colors". Both are associated with a large red eye.
3) Saturn = Gandalf. Second-largest of the planets, but turns out to be the largest if one takes into account his ring. (By the way, planetariums have taken to calling Saturn "the Lord of the Rings" which is just dreadful.)
4) Uranus & Neptune = the Blue Wizards. They are mysterious figures who end up far from Middle-Earth where the action is.

Well, just had to get that out of my system. Comments? Or just too geeky for words?
